Estate coin collection guide

Why you should never clean inherited coins

Cleaning can destroy original surfaces and lower collector appeal.

A quick reminder: This is educational information, not a formal valuation, financial advice, legal advice, or an offer to buy your coins.

Leave the surfaces alone

Polishing, abrasive wiping, chemical dips, and household cleaning can damage original surfaces. Even a coin that looks dirty may be more desirable untouched.

Preserve provenance

Old holders, labels and notes can help identify the collection and should not be casually discarded.

Ask first

If conservation appears necessary, ask a qualified professional about professional conservation rather than experimenting at home.
